PRELUDE – OSLC Praise Team

“Shine On Us” – By: Michael W. Smith

P:    The light of Christ, the love of God, and the joy of the Spirit be with you all.

C:    And also with you.

P:    In the beginning was the Word,

C:    and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

P:    In the Word was life,

C:    and the life was the light of all people.

P:    The Word became flesh and lived among us,

C:    and we have seen his glory, full of grace and truth.

P:    Let us pray:

C:     Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

HOLY GOSPEL – Mark 1:4-11

4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

P: The gospel of the Lord.  C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON – Pr. Karen Behling

“Spirit Of Gentleness”

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free;

Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.

You moved on the waters, you called to the deep,

then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep;

and over the eons you called to each thing:

“Awake from your slumbers and rise on your wings.”  Refrain

You swept through the desert, you stung with the sand,

and you goaded your people with a law and a land;

and when they were blinded with idols and lies,

then you spoke through your prophets to open their eyes.  Refrain

You sang in a stable, you cried from a hill,

then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still;

and down in the city you called once again,

when you blew through your people on the rush of the wind.  Refrain

You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes.

From the bondage of sorrow all the captives dream dreams;

our women see visions, our men clear their eyes.

With bold new decisions your people arise.  Refrain

P:    In Christ, you have heard the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation.

C:    We believe in Christ and are marked with the promise of our baptisms.

P:    Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith and ground ourselves in our faith in God.

C:    We pray in the Holy Spirit. (Jude 20)

P:    We strive to keep ourselves in the love of God;

C:    We look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Jude 21)

P:    If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation:

C:    Everything old has passed away; behold, everything has become new! (2 Corinthians 5:17)

P:    God has given us the ministry of reconciliation. Therefore, let us be reconciled to God and to one another.

Gracious God:

C:    Have mercy on us. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone. Uphold us by your Spirit so that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

P:    The almighty and merciful God grant us forgiveness of all our sins.

C:    Amen

P:    Sisters and brothers, rejoice. Let us mend our ways, encourage one another, agree with one another, and may the peace of Christ be with you always.

C:    And also with you.

P: Let us pray: O God, we thank you for bringing us together as a community connected by the internet. As your people, we pray that your love will unite us. Cleanse us of everything that would distract us or sap our strength for supporting each other and working together to serve our neighbors. May we be a community of loving purposes, reaching out to each other, breaking down walls and divisions, and building bridges that connect people. Help us to be your light and hands in a dark and fragmented world. We pray together, as you have taught us:

C:    Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.  Give us today our daily bread.  Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.  For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen

P:    O God, you have called us, your servants, to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, using skills as yet untested, amid risks and perils unknown. Give us faith to love and serve our neighbors with courage and compassion, not knowing what will happen next or how long anything may last, but trusting that your hand is leading us, and your love supporting us, in the holy name of God, Creator, + Redeemer and Sustainer.

C:    Amen.

“Shine, Jesus, Shine” – By:Graham Kendrick

Chorus:Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory;

blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire.

Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy;

send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light!

Lord, the light of your love is shining,  in the midst of the darkness, shining;

Jesus, light of the world, shine upon us,  set us free by the truth you now bring us.

Shine on me, shine on me:     Chorus

As we gaze on your kingly brightness,  so our faces display your likeness,

ever changing from glory to glory,  mirrored here, may our lives tell your story.

Shine on me, shine on me:     Chorus

P:    Abide in peace. Serve the Lord.

C:    Thanks be to God.
